Keys for selecting text and graphics

Select text and graphics

Select text by holding down SHIFT and pressing a keystroke that moves the insertion point.

To extend a selection

Press

One character to the right

SHIFT-RIGHT ARROW

One character to the left

SHIFT-LEFT ARROW

To the end of a word

CTRL-SHIFT-RIGHT ARROW

To the beginning of a word

CTRL-SHIFT-LEFT ARROW

To the end of a line

SHIFT-END

To the beginning of a line

SHIFT-HOME

One line down

SHIFT-DOWN ARROW

One line up

SHIFT-UP ARROW

To the end of a paragraph

CTRL-SHIFT-DOWN ARROW

To the beginning of a paragraph

Use extend (EXT) mode

Turn extend mode on

F8

Select the nearest character

F8, then LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW

Select to a specific character

F8, then type the character

Increase the size of a selection

F8 (press once to turn extend mode on, twice to select a word, three times select a sentence, four times to select a paragraph, five times to select the whole document)

Reduce the size of a selection

SHIFT-F8

Turn extend mode off

ESC
